U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has announced that the U.S. is sending the USS Georgia to the Middle East to strengthen the U.S. military posture and capabilities there.:The USS Georgia, a nuclear-powered submarine armed with cruise missiles, has been ordered to join forces with two US Carrier Strike Groups in the area.
The move comes in response to fears of a wider regional conflict, after the recent assassination of senior Hezbollah and Hamas leaders. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin reiterated the U.S. commitment to"take every possible step to defend Israel" on Sunday, in the seventh call with his Israeli counterpart, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, in recent weeks.
