The U.S. Open will be a 15-day event this year, shifting to a Sunday start for the first time in its history. This change aligns the tournament with the Australian and French Opens.

The U.S. Open is expanding to 15 days this year, marking a significant shift for the tournament as it moves to a Sunday start for the first time in its history. This change, confirmed by the USTA in a news release, aligns the U.S. Open with the Australian Open and the French Open, both of which adopted a 15-day format .

Fans who subscribed for ticket information from the USTA were informed of the change via email on Wednesday, along with the updated dates for the season's last Grand Slam tennis tournament: August 24 to September 7. The USTA emphasized that, aside from the Sunday start, no further adjustments to the singles main draw schedule are planned after the first round. While the first round will be spread over three days—Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday—this marks a return to the three-day format used until 2015, when the tournament briefly shortened it to two days. Wimbledon remains the lone Grand Slam event that begins on a Monday and runs for 14 days, a length achieved only due to the addition of play on the middle Sunday in 2022. Previously, Wimbledon's traditional off day limited play to 13 days. This change in the U.S. Open's scheduling strategy presents an opportunity to increase revenue through ticket sales and enhance the sport's exposure. The Australian Open, having successfully implemented a 15-day format, has set attendance records in both its editions. Despite the growing acceptance of Sunday starts at Grand Slams, some players like Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova expressed reservations when the French Open initiated the 15-day trend in 2006. Sharapova, who played on that inaugural Sunday, criticized the French federation's focus on ticket sales and profit over the well-being of players. However, with the U.S. Open joining the ranks of the other Grand Slams, the Sunday start seems to be here to stay
