A 29-year-old man was shot to death when he brandished a gun at law enforcement officers who were trying to arrest him, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

Arrest warrants had been issued for the dead man, whose name has not bee released, on drug and gun offenses, according to a news release from the marshals. At about 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, marshals and members of a multi-agency task force arrived at a home near 4100 South and 4200 West in West Valley City. Several residents of the home came outside, following orders from the task force.

However, the fugitive remained inside, locked himself in a bedroom and hid in a closet, according to the news release. He refused to comply with commands to come out. According to marshals, the man “brandished a firearm” and “multiple” members of the task force opened fire, shooting the fugitive. Marshals did not specify how many officers fired; what agencies they work for; or how many times the dead man was hit.

According to the news release, medics attempted “life-saving measures” but the man died at the scene a short time later. The shooting is under investigation by the West Valley City Police Department. The shooting marked the 23rd police shooting in Utah so far this year, according to a database maintained by The Salt Lake Tribune.
