According to the new report, the top five causes of death in the U.S. last year were heart disease, cancer, unintentional injuries, stroke and chronic lower respiratory diseases. Death rates fell for nine of the top 10 causes in 2023, while the rate of cancer deaths remained fairly unchanged. Overdose deaths involving opioids also fell last year, with a 17% decrease in deaths associated with the category that includes morphine, oxycodone and hydrocodone.
The CDC also analyzed death rates in the U.S. by race, ethnicity and gender and found that the declines were not even across groups.
