Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove ordered federal prosecutors to drop charges against New York Mayor Eric Adams, citing concerns about prejudicial pretrial publicity and the impact on Adams' ability to address pressing issues. The decision comes after months of speculation and follows Adams' shift in stance towards former President Donald Trump, with whom he has cultivated a warm relationship.
Tuesday, February 11, 2025 1:03AMA top official at the U.S. Department of Justice has ordered federal prosecutors to drop charges against New York Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat who has cultivated a warm relationship with President Donald Trump .
The Justice Department's order directs that the case be dismissed without prejudice, which conceivably means that it could be refiled later. Adams' attorney, Alex Spiro, released a statement saying, "As I said from the outset, the mayor is innocent-and he would prevail. Today he has. The Department of Justice has reevaluated this case and determined it should not go forward. There is good reason for that. The facts of the case are clear: the mayor never used his official position for personal benefit. Nor did he have any role in violating campaign finance laws.
The Democrat chastised people who called Trump a fascist. While he still said he was voting for Kamala Harris, Adams stopped saying the then-vice president's name at public events, except when goaded by reporters. "I know what it's like to be persecuted by the DOJ, for speaking out against open borders," Trump said in October at a Manhattan event attended by Adams. "We were persecuted, Eric. I was persecuted, and so are you, Eric."
