The U.S. figure skating community is reeling from the devastating loss of life in the midair plane crash at Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C. The U.S. Figure Skating Organization confirmed that multiple members of the skating community were among the victims after an American Airlines passenger flight collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter over the Potomac River on Wednesday evening.

The group was traveling back to their respective homes from Wichita, Kansas, following the U.S. Figure Skating Championships and National Development Camps.Doug Zeghibe, CEO of the Skating Club of Boston, shared the heartbreaking news, stating that, 'To the best of our knowledge, 14 skaters that were returning home from the National Development Camp at Wichita, Kansas, put on by U.S. Figure Skating were lost in the plane crash at Washington, D.C.' He revealed that six of the victims were from the Skating Club of Boston, including young athletes, their mothers, and a married coaching couple. Anthony Ponomarenko, a 24-year-old professional figure skater from San Jose, California, knew the Boston coaches personally and was friends with their son, who was not on the flight. Despite competing in the National Figure Skating Championships in Kansas, Ponomarenko received a frantic call from his parents at 3 a.m. on Thursday, initially believing he might have been on the ill-fated flight. He recounted the shock and disbelief, saying, 'It was shocking. I honestly didn't know how to go about it. I didn't sleep from the moment my parents called me, until... I didn't sleep.' The news of the specific victims on board deeply saddened him.Kristi Yamaguchi, a Bay Area native and Olympic figure skating gold medalist, expressed her grief on X, stating, 'My heart breaks for my skating community and all who are involved in the plane crash. Too much is still unknown, sending love and prayers.' Ponomarenko shared that the figure skating community is planning to honor the lives lost in this tragedy at the World Figure Skating Championships in Boston. The U.S. Figure Skating Organization released a statement on Thursday morning expressing their profound sorrow and offering condolences to the families of the victims. They confirmed that multiple members of their skating community were on American Airlines Flight 5342 and are committed to providing further updates as more information becomes available
