The Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights has warned Jefferson County Public Schools in Colorado for alleged Title IX violations, citing policies that allow male students access to female sports teams, bathrooms, locker rooms, and overnight accommodations. The district faces potential loss of federal funding if it fails to comply.
The U.S. Department of Education has issued a warning to a Colorado school district, stating that it is in ongoing violation of Title IX by failing to protect girls' sports and private spaces.
The department's Office for Civil Rights (OCR) sent a letter to Jefferson County Public Schools, giving the district ten days to come into compliance before a "Letter of Impending Enforcement Action" is issued. Title IX is a federal law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in education programs and activities that receive federal funding.
OCR's investigation concluded that the district violated Title IX by permitting male students to access female bathrooms, locker rooms, and overnight accommodations, and to participate on female sports teams. The district's policies are based on students' self-proclaimed "gender identity" rather than biological sex. According to the department, athletic rosters provided by the district indicate that male students may occupy up to 61 roster positions on girls' sports teams.
Despite a proposed "Resolution Agreement" to address these violations, the district has taken no corrective action. The warning letter explains that continued non-compliance could result in the termination of the district's federal education funding.
Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Kimberly Richey condemned the district's actions, stating, "Not only did the District trample on females' sex-based protections by allowing males to compete in their sports, intrude in their bathrooms, and sleep in their overnight accommodations, but now it refuses to fix the problem after being given the chance. It is indifferent to the law and to the safety, privacy, and dignity of women and girls. Its behavior here is unconscionable.
" She added, "The District must restore Title IX protections or risk further enforcement action. As we continue to honor June as Title IX Month, the Trump Administration will not allow students to continue to be abused at the hands of a radical ideological agenda that undermines the basic protections to which they are entitled under law.
" The OCR investigation was launched in June 2025 after allegations that the district eliminated single-sex overnight accommodations on school trips. The proposed resolution demanded that the district revise its "gender identity" policies, issue a public statement committing to biology-based definitions of sex, and ensure that intimate facilities, sports teams, and overnight stays are segregated by biological sex. Breitbart News contacted Jefferson County Public Schools for comment but had not received a response at the time of publication
