The U.S. Department of Education is launching investigations into alleged instances of antisemitism at five universities nationwide, including Northwestern University. The investigations stem from President Trump’s executive order aimed at combating antisemitism and reports of widespread harassment against Jewish students, particularly following the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023.
The U.S. Department of Education announced it is launching investigations into alleged cases of antisemitism at five universities across the country, including Northwestern University in Evanston. This action follows President Donald Trump’s executive order last month aimed at combating antisemitism. The department alleges widespread antisemitic harassment at these institutions, particularly escalating after the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
Besides Northwestern, the Department of Education is initiating probes into Columbia University, Portland State University, the University of California at Berkeley, and the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Craig Trainor, acting assistant secretary for civil rights, stated, 'Too many universities have tolerated widespread antisemitic harassment and the illegal encampments that paralyzed campus life last year, driving Jewish life and religious expression underground. The Biden Administration’s toothless resolution agreements did shamefully little to hold those institutions accountable.' He continued, 'Today, the Department is putting universities, colleges, and K-12 schools on notice: this administration will not tolerate continued institutional indifference to the wellbeing of Jewish students on American campuses, nor will it stand by idly if universities fail to combat Jew hatred and the unlawful harassment and violence it animates.'In response to the investigation, Northwestern University stated its commitment to fully cooperate with the probe. The university emphasized, 'There is no place for antisemitism or any form of identity-based discrimination or hate at Northwestern University. Free expression and academic freedom are among our core values, but we have made clear that these values provide no excuse for behavior that threatens the well-being of others.' Northwestern expressed confidence in its actions to address antisemitism, including updating its student code of conduct and disciplinary procedures, and investments in public safety. The Department of Education also cited investigations by the Republican-controlled House Committee on Education and Workforce, which concluded that university leaders 'overwhelmingly failed' to protect Jewish students on their campuses.
