The nearly two-hour hearing brought high-ranking officers representing the U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Coast Guard and Alaska’s National Guard to the Southeast city to provide an update on military activity, initiatives, and expectations.

“One of the things we’re changing in the Air Force is we’re working to give me more ability and more responsibility for the readiness of the units in Alaska, and that comes with increased OPCON — operational control over the units — and that’s something I will be working on and finishing up before I leave command over the summer,” Nahom told the committee.
The Air Force is also adopting new standards for its military-issued uniforms, modeling layers after the U.S. Army, which Nahom says, is a lot more effective in cold weather climates. The Air Force recently announced that it would beU.S. Army Brig. Gen. Thomas Burke, the 11th Airborne Division Deputy Commander for Support followed Nahom’s presentation, aiming focus on the Army’s deterrence abilities in the Arctic with tensions continuing to rise due to China and Russia.
“Simultaneously we are building relationships with our Arctic nations like Norway and Sweden because the Army is realizing the unique Arctic capabilities of the 11th Airborne Division here in Alaska,” Burke told lawmakers. “And while we routinely exercise with our closest partner, Canada, we are also working with countries like Germany, Italy, and Finland about how they conduct cold weather operations.
