A look at water three kilometres underground suggests more may have to go in to evaluating potential storage sites.

University of Saskatchewan engineering professor Grant Ferguson was part of a team studying ancient groundwater in the Paradox Basin, straddling portions of Utah and Colorado.

So, it’s a long timeframe, but when you think about things like ‘We want to put carbon dioxide in the ground and store it forever,’ or however long we think that might be, or to think about problems like storing nuclear waste, then we do get into those sorts of timeframes where it’s tens of thousands or maybe even a million years we want to do this. So, it is interesting that it’s not as stagnant as we thought.

A: This idea that if we can find areas where the water hasn’t moved for millions and millions of years then it’s probably a safe bet — in most cases, that’s probably true. But I think what this research shows is that that’s not always true, right?Article content We did have the few in northern Saskatchewan, I think there was one up by English River, but it was ruled out because they were just too complicated. And I think that’s what we’re looking for, is simple sites that we can make some conclusive, or near-conclusive judgments on.A: The biggest thing that we’re up against here is we’ve only got a few windows to these deep groundwater supplies.
