UNITED NATIONS - U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will use his annual address to world leaders next week to push for a global ceasefire until the end of 2020 so countries can fight the coronavirus pandemic, but he said opportunities will be lost because presidents and prime ministers are not physically in New York.

U.S. President Donald Trump is the only leader considering delivering his address in person on the first day, when Guterres will also deliver his address in person. “There are signals of hope, but we need to mobilize the whole of the international community to make this global ceasefire be a reality until the end of the year,” said Guterres, a former prime minister of Portugal who began a five-year term as U.N. chief in 2017.

Globally there have been nearly 30 million novel coronavirus infections and more than 900,000 deaths, according to a Reuters tally.
