The U.K.’s Supreme Court voted that Scotland’s parliament doesn’t have the power to call a second referendum on independence, quashing a plan by the Scottish National Party to force a vote next year
had changed the economic landscape and that Scotland would now better prosper alone. Polling over the last year shows that the Scots are roughly evenly divided on whether to end the union with Britain.
The U.K. government urged politicians in Scotland to move on and press other matters like the cost-of-living crisis resulting from high inflation and weak economic growth. To force matters, the Scottish government filed a legal appeal saying that it had the power to call a referendum, arguing any vote would be purely advisory and so wouldn’t have a direct effect on the state of the union between England and Scotland. The Supreme Court rejected that argument but ruled it couldn’t express a view on the political question of whether Scotland should become independent.
