Tyson Foods is closing two prepared foods facilities in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, leading to layoffs for over 200 employees. The company cited the need for operational efficiency as the reason for the closures. Tyson Foods is offering support to affected workers, including encouraging them to apply for other positions within the company and working with state and local officials to provide additional resources.
The company filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification notice with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry informing the state it is closing its facilities at 529 E. Huntington Park Ave. and at 4001 North American St.
One hundred and ten people at the company’s plant on North American Street will be laid off and 119 workers will be laid off at the plant East Huntington Park Avenue.“After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to close our two Prepared Foods facilities in Philadelphia to increase the efficiency of our operations. We understand the impact the decision has on our team members and the local community.
The last day for employees at the facility on East Huntington Park Avenue was on Dec. 13 and workers will be compensated through Jan. 31, Tyson Foods said in the WARN notice. The WARN Act is federal legislation that offers protection to workers, their families, and communities by requiring employers to provide notice 60 days in advance of a covered-business closing and covered-business mass layoff.
