Attorney Ben Crump on Monday described Memphis police body camera footage showing a Jan. 7 traffic stop involving deceased Tyre Nichols as 'appalling' and 'heinous.'
The family of deceased Tyre Nichols is awaiting police-worn body camera footage of a Jan. 7 traffic stop that they believe led to the 29-year-old's death on Jan. 10.
"It is appalling. It is deplorable. It is heinous. It is violent," Crump said of the footage, likening it to video of Rodney King, a Black man who was beaten by police in the 1990s. A portrait of Tyre Nichols is displayed at a memorial service for him on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2023 in Memphis, Tenn. Nichols was killed during a traffic stop with Memphis Police on Jan. 7.
Authorities transported Nichols to St. Francis Hospital in critical condition, and the 28-year-old died three days later on Jan. 10, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation , which is investigating the incident.Civil rights attorney Ben Crump likened police-worn body camera footage of Tyre Nichols to that of Rodney King in the 1990s.
