The National Weather Service warned that water levels in Nome could be up to 11 feet above the normal high tide line on Friday and Saturday and up to 13 feet in Golovin.
A vast swath of western Alaska could see flooding and high winds as the remnants of Typhoon Merbok move toward the Bering Sea region., spanning from parts of southwest Alaska all the way up to the Chukchi Sea coast in northwest Alaska. The agency warned Thursday that water levels in Nome could be up to 11 feet above the normal high tide line, and in Golovin up to 13 feet.
The coastal flood warning for the southern Seward Peninsula coast, including Nome, was in effect from Friday evening until Sunday morning. Pressure down to 953mb and falling rapidly.As of 11pm this evening Buoy 46071 south of Amchitka Island in the Western Aleutians has recorded seas to 41 feet🌊🌊!! Warnings from the weather service said roads could be closed and low-lying property could be “inundated” for areas such as the southern Seward Peninsula coast, St. Lawrence Island and the Bering Strait coast.John Handeland, Nome’s mayor, said Thursday that officials were getting weather updates and have been preparing. He said a recreation center has been set up for use as an emergency shelter, if needed.

Koinu, which means “puppy” in Japanese, made landfall early Thursday in Cape Eluanbi, the southernmost tip of Taiwan. The storm is expected to weaken as it moves west toward Guangdong and Fujian provinces in southern China. The typhoon brought the fastest-ever wind recorded in Taiwan as it approached on Wednesday night. A weather monitoring station on the outlying Orchid Island measured a gust of 212.9 mph. That's the highest windspeed Taiwan has recorded since it began keeping track in 1897.
