After hitting the red carpet in a pink bellboy suit and performing alongside Boyz II Men and Charlie Wilson at the Grammys Sunday night, hit the stage again later that evening to accept the honor of winning best rap album for his 2019 masterpiecePerhaps thinking of his unlikely rise from Odd Future button-pusher to Grammy winner, Tyler's mother was in tears when she took the stage alongside him. "That's my mom, if y'all wondering," Tyler told the crowd before putting his arm around her – "Mom, I gotta say my speech, dog.
"Hello, hi, so I don’t know if I'm gonna be up here again, so bear with me," he said. In his speech, he thanked his mother for doing a "great job," his managers for taking "a seed and watering it," his friends and family for "trusting my ideas and putting up with my annoying, hyperactive energy," and his label for "trusting my crazy ideas."
As the playoff music started, Tyler continued, paying homage to one of his earliest influences. "I really wanna thank Pharrell Williams. For growing up and feeling left of center to a lot of stuff I saw on TV, that man opened doors," he said. He thanked his fans along the same lines: "I never felt fully accepted in rap, so for y'all to stand by me, I really appreciate it."
