To combat potential icing on San Antonio roads during next week's anticipated wintry weather, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is gearing up to pre-treat bridges and vulnerable areas with brine. This preventative measure involves applying a solution of water and chloride, essentially salt water, to the road surfaces. TxDOT spokesperson Tanya Brown explained that brine works by lowering the freezing point of water, preventing snow and ice from forming and bonding to pavement.
After application, the water evaporates, leaving behind the chlorides that effectively raise the temperature at which water freezes. This means less snow and ice accumulation on roadways, even when temperatures dip below freezing. \TxDOT plans to begin its brine treatment on Sunday and continue through next week, focusing on elevated structures, steep slopes, and areas prone to freezing. The agency anticipates an arctic cold front hitting South Texas this weekend, bringing below-freezing temperatures that are expected to persist throughout much of next week. While there is uncertainty regarding the amount of snow or ice the region might receive, wintry precipitation is most likely from Monday evening through Tuesday midday, according to Express-News meteorologist Anthony Franze. \TxDOT typically initiates brine treatment at least 24 hours before anticipated precipitation when temperatures are forecast to be below freezing. Crews will likely spray the road surfaces twice before the arrival of precipitation, utilizing tankers and calibrated spray rigs mounted on dump trucks. This process is conducted at near-highway speeds to ensure traffic flow remains uninterrupted. Unlike granular road salts, brine solutions won't be displaced by heavy traffic before the storm hits.
