In 2015, a federal act created the Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside Program to help states build bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, as well as to support safe alternatives to motor vehicle transportation and alleviate congestion. “I’m thrilled to see this increase in funding that’ll help communities build impactful improvements for its citizens,” TxDOT Transportation Commissioner Robert Vaughn said in a written statement. “As a jogger and cyclist myself, I know the value these enhancements can bring to help Texans get to work, run errands, and enjoy the beautiful Texas outdoors.”

The agency also plans to broaden its program scope in 2023 by accepting noninfrastructure projects — those that don’t involve construction. These typically include planning studies, travel demand models, motorist assistance programs and other transportation analysis,In the past, the state has approved funding for shared-use paths for walkers and cyclists, multiuse rails, sidewalks and designated bicycle lanes across Texas.
