In 2021, vandals tagged the restaurant's window and a nearby bench with racist hate speech and a death threat.
“It was a temporary thing," Nguyen said."It wasn't going to be anything big, but within three weeks of owning the food truck, we got investors, and it kind of snowballed from there.”on Noodle tree's windows and a bench nearby.
The incident happened just after Nguyen, who is of Vietnamese and French descent, went on CNN to speak against Gov. Greg Abbott’s decision to lift the state’s mask mandate. Due to his health, Nguyen refused to open his restaurant after Abbott allowed for more reopenings. The San Antonio Police Department said it was unable to recover any security footage from the time of the incident. Nguyen sarcastically says it was just his luck — his security camera DVRs were “fried” after Winter Storm Uri and accompanying power outages passed through the month before, he said.
