Two people were shot Thursday afternoon in downtown Denver nearby the city’s celebratory parade for the Nuggets’ NBA finals and about the time the celebration wrapped up in Civic Center.
At an afternoon news conference outside Denver Health Medical Center, police Chief Ron Thomas said people were leaving the downtown area when the two women were shot. They were taken to the medical center, where they were listed in serious condition.
Thomas said the shooting was “unassociated with the parade,” and that police believe the shooter and the women knew each other. An unidentified young man captured on surveillance video is suspected of opening fire, despite the heavy police presence downtown — a repeat of shooting violence Monday night in the immediate aftermath of the Nuggets’ championship-clinching victory.
Thomas lamented what he sees as too much evidence that, “unfortunately, we have far too many guns in our community” and that “individuals now in our community are emboldened to act in an irresponsible way, regardless of who is watching.”Photographs and video on the thread of the DPD tweet show people streaming by the scene, where two e-scooters were laid down on the sidewalk nearby a pool of blood. An investigation is ongoing.
