Two-way tolling on the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Tunnel, and the Eastern Distributor, are among key recommendations from a long-awaited review of the city’s motorway system.

Two-way tolling on the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Tunnel, and the Eastern Distributor, as well as charging motorists less the longer they drive on toll roads, are among key recommendations from a long-awaited review which has found serious flaws in the city’s motorway system.

“Unlike most businesses, once a toll price is established toll operators have a monopoly and toll prices are free from price competition,” he said. With Sydney one of the world’s most-tolled city, the interim report identifies serious flaws in the system including a monopoly by Transurban on the toll road system and inadequately targeted and under-utilised toll relief schemes.

Roads Minister John Graham said last week that the government would not proceed with a shake-up unless drivers were “absolutely” better off under reform of the tolling system.Alex Ellinghausen
