Footage shared on X, formerly Twitter, captures separate twisters near El Campo in Wharton County and in the Crosby area of Harris County. While no injuries have been reported in either incident, authorities confirmed that three farms in Wharton County sustained damage. Tornadoes can be destructive in Texas, with a tornado in the northern part of the state in May 2024 resulting in seven fatalities after it ravaged a truck stop. Although tornadoes are more common during the summer months, they can also occur in winter, particularly in the southeastern U.S. and Gulf Coast states. According to the Weather Channel, Texas averages 124 tornadoes annually between 2003 and 2022, more than any other state. Earlier this week, Texas was battered by severe storms, prompting flash flood warnings on Tuesday from the National Weather Service (NWS). The NWS reported that heavy rain and powerful winds created a flash flood risk in the Dallas/Fort Worth area on Thursday, potentially affecting families returning home after Christmas Day. On Thursday, the Wharton County Sheriff's Office reported a tornado near Highway 59 and the El Campo truck stop, heading northeast toward Pierce, and urged residents in the area to seek shelter immediately, according to local news station Click 2 Houston. A 16-second clip of the tornado was posted on X by the Live Storm Chasers account, which has over 40,000 followers and tracks extreme weather events. The footage shows a tornado across the road from a group of people inside a building, with one individual urging others to come inside as they are about to lock the door. The video garnered over 580,000 views on the platform
