Australian Strategic Policy Institute Executive Director Justin Bassi has highlighted two key lessons Australia must learn after a “highly surgical” detonation of thousands of pagers in Lebanon and Syria.
The handheld pagers belonged to members of the radical Islamic terrorist organisation Hezbollah which had beenAt least 11 people were killed and about 4,000 wounded in the pager detonation, which Hezbollah immediately blamed Israel for.A top national security specialist has drawn attention to Israel ’s two lessons for Australia after its “highly surgical,” “highly sophisticated” mass strike on the pagers of thousands of Hezbollah fighters.
“On October 7, apart from the lives that were lost and the hostages taken, deterrence was lost,” Mr Bassi said. “This is a highly sophisticated strike, highly surgical, taken significant planning to get access to the pagers after they were produced but before they were delivered, and to surgically strike in Lebanon in a group of Hezbollah members.”
“Australia needs to not only take note of what’s happening in the region … but there are very much lessons for Australia to learn in the cyber security and supply chain fields,” he said. The explosive material, about 56 grams, was implanted next to the batteries of the pagers, along with a switch which could be triggered remotely to detonate them.
