Liam Martin won over fans on both sides of the border with some bruising tackles, including one involving good mate J’maine Hopgood.
These are the bone-jarring tackles that prove to Blues coach Michael Maguire his battered team has what it takes to turn the tables on Queensland in Origin II.
Several Maroons spoke in the sheds about Martin’s colourful two-word term he directed at his interstate rivals every time he drove them into the turf. “I can’t repeat what I said. There were a lot of swear words. I’m in a group chat with J’maine. I’m sure it will get brought up.“It’s Origin, I try to bring that physicality, set a standard for the team, and go after it.”Hopgood certainly felt a little worse for wear, but grateful his side triumphed in his Origin debut.
Martin was out on his feet on several occasions late in the game, but inspired his teammates with his defensive efforts. Meanwhile, Martin’s Penrith teammate Dylan Edwards spoke for the first time about the quad injury that delayed his own Origin dream, and how he would do everything to return on Sunday week in what would be a final Origin II audition.Edwards felt a “grab” in his left quad during an extras session after training on Saturday and was replaced by James Tedesco.
