Two systems will bring snow and rain to parts of the Midwest and Northeast into next week:
The first system will bring snow to the upper Midwest this weekend.A one-two punch of snow is ahead for portions of the nation's northern tier beginning this weekend.
The first of the two systems will arrive this weekend, so let's step through that system day-by-day first, then we'll look closer at the more uncertain forecast for next week and the second system. The first of the two systems will begin to percolate in the northern Rockies and Northern Plains by early Saturday as a band of snow. By late in the day, that band will become heavier and will move into the Northern Plains and into the upper Midwest.
Behind this system, winds will increase this weekend from the northern Rockies into the northern Plains. These strong winds from Canada will usher in a sharp drop in temperatures to start the upcoming work week. Winds will be gusty around the Great Lakes from Sunday night into Monday. More than 6 inches of snow are possible from Minnesota's arrowhead into northern Michigan, with even higher amounts, possibly as much as a foot, in the snowbelts of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The details of the second system remains a bit more uncertain but a few snow showers may develop in parts of eastern South Dakota, southern Minnesota and northern Iowa on Tuesday.
