With rewilding and other environmental movements growing, golf is increasingly under fire Now a number of courses are being returned to nature, many having closed during the pandemic
. Pewit golf course in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, is being converted into a nature reserve after nearly a century of golf. In Cheshire, the Woodland Trust recently took over Frodsham golf course. At Selsdon in Croydon, golf had been enjoyed on the plush former estate since 1929. In January 2022, the final round was played.

According to Cox, the course is particularly well suited to creating a mosaic of landscapes.
Ancient woodland surrounds much of the course, beyond that King’s Wood to the south and Selsdon Wood to the east, which Cox hopes will connect around 500 acres of ancient woodland. Coppicing will encourage scrubland, creating habitat for endangered dormice and nightingales. On the former Selsdon course, mowing and spraying have stopped, and butterfly populations are already rising
