There has been four West Nile virus reports out of the county so far this year.

Using mosquito repellants and wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants.Securing window and door screens to prevent mosquitos from entering your home.Treating water sources that cannot be drained with mosquito dunks that contain Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis , which kill larvae. These products are safe for use around humans and pets; and can be found at hardware stores and other local retailers.

The vector control office will continue to collect and monitor the mosquito population and treat their water habitat to limit future generations of mosquitoes. One in five people infected with West Nile fever develop mild symptoms including aches, fever, skin rash and swollen lymph nodes, according to the DEP.

With rest and fluids, most people recover in a few days. Less than 1 percent of infections develop into the life-threatening West Nile Encephalitis. Severe case symptoms include a high fever, headache, neck stiffness, muscle weakness, disorientation, tremors, and convulsions. This infection requires immediate medical treatment.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention CDC, mosquitoes transmit West Nile virus by feeding on infected birds and transmit the disease when biting another bird, animal, or human. The virus is not spread by person-to-person contact.
