Both Tulare and Placer counties had also reported people missing in rivers two weeks earlier.
In the previous Tulare County incident, on the evening of April 28, a 25-year-old man could not be found after he went into the Kaweah River to try to help a man and a 7-year-old girl who were trapped on rocks near the Slick Rock recreation area. The father and daughter were rescued safely. The following week, the sheriff announced recreation was off limits in the Kaweah at Slick Rock and nearby Cobble Knoll, both about 2 miles downstream from the town of Three Rivers.
Around 7:45 p.m. April 29, a man went missing at an unspecified spot on the American River in Auburn. He had been among a group of friends from Placer and Sacramento counties who were visiting the river.
