Two men are facing federal charges in Toledo, Ohio, following a money laundering bust linked to a University of Toledo student. The men were allegedly part of a scam that defrauded multiple people in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, involving PayPal schemes, Microsoft computer fixes, and Bitcoin scams. Victims were ordered to pay in gold bars, Bitcoin, or cash. One victim in Toledo paid over $40,000.
TOLEDO, Ohio - Two men are facing federal charges after a massive money laundering bust that all ties back to a UToledo student.Federal agents said the two men were part of a massive scam. The scams defrauded multiple people out of hundreds of thousands of dollars in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Ohio.
The group was allegedly involved in multiple scams, including PayPal schemes, Microsoft computer fixes and Bitcoin scams. According to a criminal complaint, the victims of the scams were ordered to pay in gold bars, Bitcoin or large amounts of cash. That includes scamming a woman in Toledo after claiming they were with the Federal Trade Commission. That woman paid them over $40,000 in cash.Patel and Bhatt appeared in federal court on Jan. 30 and waived their preliminary hearings. Patel is scheduled to be in court again on Feb. 6 for a detention hearing.
