Two men are facing charges after witnesses reported a 'burst of gunfire and sounds of people fighting' in Salt Lake's Central 9th Neighborhood. Officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department started their investigation just before 11:30 p.m.

Friday after receiving several calls from community members about a fight near 625 South Washington Street. Witnesses described a 'chaotic scene with several people arguing, which led to the shooting,' the police department said. When officers arrived at the scene, however, they did not find any active fighting or gunshot victims. Detectives with the police department's Gang Unit found the suspect vehicle traveling rapidly and stopped it near Bryant Avenue and State Street. Two men were arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail, although their names have not been released. One of the men was booked on charges of possession of a weapon by a restricted person, possession of a stolen firearm, and unlawful possession of a controlled substance. The other man was booked on charges of possession of a weapon by a restricted person and unlawful possession of a controlled substance. Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown said although their investigation is ongoing, the shooting appears to have been a 'reckless act of violence.' 'While we try to prevent violence from occurring, when it does, we will conduct thorough investigations to hold offenders accountable and to help ensure that Salt Lake City remains safe,' he said
