One officer was still being treated after a man shot at LAPD officers trying to bring him into custody on Wednesday.
Two Los Angeles Police Department officers were released from the hospital, while another was still being treated, and authorities identified the suspect after a barricaded parolee shot at officers in Lincoln Heights and later died on Wednesday, March 8, authorities said.
The LAPD and the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office have identified the suspect as 32-year-old Los Angeles resident Jonathan Magana. Magana had a lengthy criminal record with a litany of charges for possessing firearms and drugs, robbery, and for assaulting a peace officer in January. The shooting occurred after officers responded to a call around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at North Mission Road and North Broadway Street. A standoff lasting more than two hours ensued, with SWAT and the LAPD Metropolitan K-9 Division also arriving on scene.
A citywide tactical alert, which frees up resources and orders officers to stay on call past the end of their shift, was temporarily activated. The officers who were shot at were immediately transported to an area hospital. All three were involved with the Metropolitan K-9 Division.
