Body camera footage captured the heroic rescue of a 100-year-old woman from a senior living facility engulfed by the Eaton Fire. Deputies Nicholas Martinez and Quinn Alkonis risked their lives to save the deaf woman who couldn't hear their calls for help.
A harrowing video released by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department on Tuesday showcased the bravery of two deputies who rescued a 100-year-old woman from a senior living facility as the Eaton Fire raged nearby. The body camera footage captured deputies Nicholas Martinez and Quinn Alkonis navigating the darkened halls of the evacuated facility, their flashlights illuminating the smoke-filled space. They diligently called out, searching room by room for any remaining residents.
As the flames grew closer, visible through the facility's windows, their urgency intensified. Turning a corner, they encountered the 100-year-old woman approaching them with her walker. \'Hello? Where are you at?' the deputies shouted into the distance. 'Let's get you out of here,' one deputy responded reassuringly. 'I promise I won't leave you,' he added, 'No, we won't lose you. Don't worry.' The woman explained that she hadn't heard the deputies calling because she is deaf and her hearing aids were not charged. \Deputies Martinez and Alkonis, assigned to the Carson station, were part of a large contingent of first responders who bravely ventured into the hazardous area of Altadena, a place unfamiliar to them. Their actions were lauded by Sheriff Robert Luna, who stated, 'Their courage and selflessness exemplify the highest standards of law enforcement, and they deserve our deepest respect and gratitude.'
