Interstate 80 has been shut down between Evanston and Fort Bridger near the Utah-Wyoming border after a vehicle pileup for the forseeable future.
Two people are dead and dozens more are injured following a vehicle pileup on Interstate 80 near the Utah/Wyoming border on Wednesday. According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol, the cause of the crash is still under investigation, but they believe that vehicles traveling too fast for the weather may have been a contributing factor.
The crashes happened simultaneously on Wednesday at around 3:00 p.m., just east of Evanston. Troopers add that the crashes happened in both the west and eastbound lanes, completely blocking both. When troopers arrived shortly after the incident, they began to work to rescue those involved in the crashes and closed the interstate in both directions. The crash in the eastbound lane involved several semi trucks and passenger vehicles. The westbound incident involved 20 semi trucks and 12 passenger vehicles. Two people died from their injuries, while another 22 people were injured. Three of the injured had to be life-flighted to Utah hospitals for treatment. The injuries varied from broken legs, broken ribs, and extreme bruising. Those not injured in the crash were transported by school buses to Evanston.
