It is understood both got into difficulty during the swimming course which had already been cut from 3.8k due to bad weather conditions.
Two Ironman competitors have tragically died in separate incidents after getting into difficulty on the 1.7km swimming course.
One of the men is believed to have suffered a medical emergency just before emerging from the water in the harbour at the end of the swim section of the race.It has been reported one of the men who tragically died was Irish and had been living in the UK while the other is believed to have travelled from Canada for the competition.In a statement, the organisers of the event said: "We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of two race participants at the IRONMAN 70.3 Ireland, Cork 2023.
"We thank the safety personnel and first responders who worked quickly to provide the athletes with medical assistance." "Two men, aged 40s and 60s, were removed from the water by emergency services. They were pronounced deceased by medical personnel.
