Two former Austin Police Chiefs testified on Tuesday in the sentencing of Officer Christopher Taylor. Taylor was convicted of deadly conduct last month in the 2

019 shooting death of Mauris DeSilva.

Former Austin Police Chief Brian Manley testified Tuesday about APD’s investigation into the officer-involved shooting of DeSilva. In July of 2019, Taylor and several other officers responded to a 911 call for a man holding a knife and acting erratically in the Spring Condominiums in Downtown Austin. Officer Taylor shot DeSilva seconds after the elevator doors opened – revealing DeSilva with a knife in his hand.

“With the verdict that was rendered, that obviously makes it very difficult for officers that are working today to know under what rules they are working,” said Manley. “Now we have a new standard. I don’t know how Chief Davis is going to approach addressing this issue.”
