Two convicted felons from Smithville, Texas were arrested on multiple gun and drug charges after a traffic stop in Fayette County on June 11, 2024, during which officers found a loaded rifle, methamphetamine, and an outstanding warrant. A search of the vehicle uncovered a loaded AR-15 style rifle. Both the driver and passenger are convicted felons prohibited from possessing firearms. Methamphetamine was also found hidden in the passenger's underwear. The passenger, identified as Melvin Johnson, 56, of Smithville, was found to have an outstanding felony warrant for drug possession out of Bastrop County. He was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a controlled substance, tampering with evidence, and interference with public duties, in addition to the Bastrop County warrant.
The driver, Randolph Simon, 61, also of Smithville, was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.
