The Ohio Arts Council announced the recipients of the 2023 Ohio Heritage Fellowship: Nancy Schwartz-Katz of Shaker Heights and Oleg Kruglyakov of Cleveland.
2023 Ohio Heritage Fellowship recipients Nancy Schwartz-Katz and Oleg Kruglyakov.CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Ohio Arts Council awarded its 2023 Ohio Heritage Fellowships to two Northeast Ohio artists: Nancy Schwartz-Katz, an illustrator from Shaker Heights, and Oleg Kruglyakov, a balalaika virtuoso from Cleveland.
The fellowships, which come with a $5,000 prize, is a statewide award dedicated to the advancement and preservation of the folk or traditional arts. Kruglyakov has studied the balalaika, a Russian stringed musical instrument, since he was seven years old. His first group, the Cleveland-based Moscow Nights, toured the U.S. for nearly a decade. His current project is Russian Duo with pianist Terry Boyarsky. Together, they perform frequently and work as artists-in-residence in schools. Kruglyakov also runs a foundation devoted to preserving Russian folk music traditions.
