An Antioch woman and a South Elgin man have been charged with murder in the shooting death of a man killed during a drug transaction at the woman’s apartment.
Both had multimillion-dollar bails — $3 million for Miller, and $10 million for Skroko — set by Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak during Thursday bond hearings.
During the hearings, Assistant State’s Attorney Steve Scheller said that Miller and Skroko planned to rob Dickerson, who had come to Miller’s Antioch apartment in the 1000 block of Main Street at about 11 p.m. Monday to sell drugs.Dickerson drove to the apartment accompanied by his girlfriend, and Miller convinced Dickerson to come inside while the girlfriend waited in the car, Scheller said
Once inside the apartment, the prosecutor said, Skroko emerged from another room with a shotgun and demanded that Dickerson hand over his drugs. Dickerson, according to the prosecutor, grabbed Miller and tried to use her as a shield. However, she escaped his grasp, and Skroko shot Dickerson once in the chest.They then went outside and confronted Dickerson’s girlfriend, and Skroko ordered her at gunpoint to drive away. She went to a gas station and called police, the prosecutor said.
Skroko and Miller went to his South Elgin residence and later checked into a Gurnee motel at the Illinois Route 41 and Grand Avenue intersection. They were taken into custody Wednesday without incident, police said. Authorities recovered five firearms that had been stashed after the shooting in the Busse Woods Forest Preserve by Skroko’s fiance, the prosecutor said.
