ENTERPRISE, Ala. - A month after a fire destroyed the barn at Two By Two Petting Zoo — killing more than 100 animals and erasing 18 years of work in under eight minutes — the Jones family is finding reasons to move forward.
For weeks after the blaze, Miss Peacock — a peahen who had lived at the zoo for years — was unaccounted for. Then, just days ago, the family’s oldest grandson spotted something beneath a piece of tin in the rubble. “Our oldest grandson was walking by the rubble up there, and he saw a little glimpse of something underneath one of the pieces of tin,” said Stephanie Jones, who owns the zoo with her husband Charles. “And when he did, he went over, and it was that peahen. She had went back home.”“He called me on the phone. He and I both were hollering and thanking God and crying all at the same time,” Stephanie said. “I mean, a little frail bird — you just can’t make that up. That’s just a miracle from God.” The fire tore through the barn last month, destroying enclosures for exotic animals and the zoo’s party rooms. In the weeks that followed, seven baby sheep were born on the property.Since the fire, community members have raised more than $11,000 for the Jones family and have continued to show up with assistance. The barn rubble is expected to be cleared next week.“We’re going on with life,” Charles said. “We don’t know what kind of life it’s going to be, but we’re just going to continue on, one step at a time, and trusting the Lord with each step as we go.”“It will take a miracle for us to be able to rebuild, but we realize that we serve a miracle-working God,” she said. “We’re not going to put him in a box or short-come anything he’s able to do. We’re willing vessels, whatever he’s willing to do.” Download the WTVY News4 app to get alerts and stories the moment they are published.
