I’ve been writing about video games, television and movies for Forbes for over 10 years, and you may have seen my reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. I cover all manner of console and PC games, but if it’s about looting or shooting, I’m definitely there. If I’m watching something, it’s usually science fiction, horror or superheroic.
Elon Musk has always said that Twitter was going to be a beacon of free speech once he took over. And now he’s delivering on that promise, threats of lawsuits from every media company and celebrity on earth be damned., has launched new, advanced image generation features similar to Midjourney and DALL-E.
There are plenty of usual “here’s an attractive woman” prompts, the first thing most users might try, given the history of these things. But things get….extremely weird and very, very bad from here. Some content warnings follow.
It’s pretty bleak stuff. Some users have also tried to turn this against Elon in a more political sense, generating Elon celebrating Pride month, holding Trans Rights signs, endorsing Harris and Waltz. The idea here is this kind of thing may finally get him to put some restrictions on the thing, but that hasn’t happened yet. Grok will not create some images based on “bad prompts” or specific people, but it’s very obvious there are easy ways to get around them.
One of the claims of most image generators is that there is no way to prove they were trained on copyrighted materials. But Grok’s ability to generate almost 1:1 depictions of characters consistently says very much the opposite. And its ability to create real people like Taylor Swift seems like that may open it up for a different sort of lawsuit.
Nothing has been filed yet, but this is only a few days old. It’s possible that Elon may realize how much this exposes him and his company up for legal issues, or he might say it’s yet another form of free speech. That remains to be seen. Our community is about connecting people through open and thoughtful conversations. We want our readers to share their views and exchange ideas and facts in a safe space.
