Prominent Twitter accounts including Elon Musk, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and Bill Gates hacked in an unprecedented bitcoin scam

Several accounts of cryptocurrency-focused organisations were also hijacked.The person said the company had locked down the Democrat's account "immediately following the breach and removed the related tweet." Publicly available blockchain records show that the apparent scammers have already received more than $110,000 worth of cryptocurrency.

While account compromises are not unusual, experts were surprised at the sheer scale and coordination of the Wednesday's incident.

According to CoinDesk, Twitter accounts for Gemini, Binance, KuCoin, Coinbase, Litecoin's Charlie Lee, Tron's Justin Sun, Bitcoin, Bitfinex, Ripple, Cash App, and CoinDesk, were also compromised. BitTorrent also confirmed the hacks and said it was working with Twitter to return its accounts to normal. Shares of Twitter declined 2.4% after hours, following a 3.8% rise to close the regular session at $35.67.
