Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones) looks tenderly at Tyler Owens (Glen Powell) in Twisters (2024)
Summary Though off to a strong start at the box office, one Steven Spielberg note changed Twisters' ending, and audiences aren't pleased. Starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos, the movie is a legacy sequel to the 1996 blockbuster disaster film and focuses on a new team of storm chasers led by Kate and Javi who set out to test a tornado scanning system in Oklahoma.
Helmed by Lee Isaac Chung, Twisters is already a box office hit, while also scoring positive reviews from critics and audiences, particularly for Edgar-Jones and Powell's performances. Now, stars Edgar-Jones and Powell reveal to Collider why a kissing scene was cut from Twisters. According to the actors, a note from Spielberg, who executive produced the original movie, stopped the kiss from being included in the sequel's final cut, though they do ultimately feel the Oscar winner was correct in his feelings. Check out what they had to say below: One of the things that I loved is the fact that your two characters don't kiss in the film. I've seen it twice, and both times audiences are like, “I can't believe they didn't kiss!” I heard you guys filmed where you kiss and, obviously, they didn't use it. What was your take on this? EDGAR-JONES: I think it's a Spielberg note, wasn’t it? Do you know what it is? I think it stops the film feeling too clichéd, actually. I think there's something really wonderful about it feeling like there's a continuation. This isn't the end of their story. They're united by their shared passion for something. POWELL: I also think that this movie is not about them finding love. It's returning Kate to the thing that she loves, which is storm chasing. So that's what you have at the end of the movie. They share this thing, and her passion is reinvigorated, and her sense of home is reinvigorated. I feel like a kiss would be sort of unrepresentative of the right goal at the end of the movie. And it is a good Spielberg note. It's why that kid is still in this game. It's amazing. Why Spielberg's Twisters Note Was Right The Legacy Disaster Thriller Sequel Is Not A Love Story Close As Twisters' stars Edgar-Jones and Powell explain, a note from Spielberg stopped the kiss from being included in the film. While Spielberg's advice was right, the pair's on-screen chemistry was so good that audiences were expecting a kiss to happen at some point in the movie. However, despite the build-up of tension, the kiss never happens, disappointing viewers, but it also opens the door for a potential sequel. As Edgar-Jones explains, it's clear that this is not the end of the pair's story, and while a kiss might wrap up their love story nicely, the absence of one leads more to be desired from viewers. Related Does Twisters Have A Post-Credits Scene? Twisters could relaunch the tornado franchise for Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones, and here's whether there is a post-credits scene setting up more. In addition to leaving room open for a potential Twisters return, the absence of a kiss also prevents the sequel from falling into the trap of becoming a cliché. A kiss, though it would please viewers, could run the risk of being too cheesy. Sometimes, it is better to leave more to be desired, as Spielberg advised them. Even in spite of some of this disappointment from viewers, it's clear it hasn't affected Twisters too much, as it's not only surpassed its box office projections, but also holds a 92% approval rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Twisters has surpassed its predecessor with both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, with the original currently holding a 67% critical and 58% audience score. Also, as Edgar-Jones and Powell explain, Twisters is not a love story. While it does have romance, the pair's love interest is not the central point of the movie, and giving their romance too much attention could've been less effective for the thrilling aspect that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. Twisters has the perfect amount of romance without risking becoming too corny, and with the sequel on-track to become one of the highest-grossing films of the summer, it's clear Spielberg's advice was right.Twisters PG-13ActionAdventureThriller A follow-up to the 1996 original film Twister, Twisters is a sequel set years after the original, said to be fast-tracked by Steven Spielberg and Mark L.
