Highland Council has insisted that the Securly filtering software on pupils' Chromebooks is working 'as intended' – despite our report that kids were exposed to X-rated images

A Scots council at the centre of a child protection storm has branded "twisted" after claiming primary kids who saw images of a sex act on a school laptop weren't exposed to pornography.

In a reply that incensed the mum, council bosses said the content was "not pornographic but in some cases it could be considered to be unsuitable." It took advice from the Highland Child Protection Committee , an independent public protection body, showing it excerpts of the child's search history. "It doesn't make any sense to me as a response to a child seeing pornography – but it makes perfect sense given that they want to protect Highland Council and their jobs."

The mum, who along with her husband works in IT, filed a complaint with the council and met with chief education officer Nicky Grant and education manager Fiona Shearer last week. But she claims the meeting only saw the school bosses beg her to stop publishing her extensive research into the filters online.

The Record understands that Highland councillors met with council officers to discuss the issue on Tuesday afternoon. Securly scrubbed any mention of Highland Council from its website after being approached by the Record. The company said: "We are aware of the complaint that has been filed and take seriously any feedback raised by parents or educators.
