Speedy Claxton, Steve Kerr and others all stepped up to help a dominant Tim Duncan during run to club's second NBA title.
Golden State Warriors guard Speedy Claxton, right, who played for the San Antonio Spurs last season, is presented his NBA championship ring by former teammate, Spurs forward Tim Duncan, left, and coach Gregg Popovich prior to the team's game in San Antonio, Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003.
After entering the postseason as the overall No. 1 seed, the Spurs overcame a loss to Phoenix in the opening game of the first round with a key 29-point outing by Parker in Game 3 to set up another showdown with the Lakers in the semifinals. Los Angeles had eliminated the Spurs two years in a row in the playoffs and were the three-time defending NBA champs after sweeping the Nets in the 2002 Finals.
That's when coach Gregg Popovich turned to the 37-year-old Kerr. The member of the Spurs' 1999 title team responded by hitting three 3-pointers to spark a 23-0 run that carried the Spurs to a 90-78 win and a matchup with New Jersey in the Finals. In a clash of former ABA teams in the Finals, the Spurs faced a rugged 49-win Nets team that finished first in the league in defensive rating and included All-Star point guard Jason Kidd, up-and-coming forwards Kenyon Martin and Richard Jefferson and four-time defensive player of the year Dikembe Mutombo. The Spurs' interest in adding Kidd in free agency after the Finals added intrigue to the matchup.
