The third-year franchise leads its league in announced attendance, despite going more than four months without a regular-season victory until two weeks ago.
Though crowds have dipped from last season’s league-best 23,650, when the Wave won the regular-season title, the club has a shot at the attendance title with three home matches left.The franchise’s success at attracting youth players earned Wave leaders a spot on the NWSL’s “best practices” list last year, said league commissioner Jessica Berman.Popular Alex Morgan drew fans across two-plus seasons, culminating in the pregnant striker’s recent sendoff before 26,000 fans.
Under Spanish coach Juan Carlos Amorós, NJ/NY Gotham FC — the defending champion — continues to play winning soccer.The Chicago Red Stars feature a world-class striker in Mallory Swanson, but at their suburban venue, where they edged the Wave last week, TV cameras reveal large swaths of empty field-level seats.The North Carolina Courage, owners of two NWSL titles, have it worse. Though unbeaten in 10 home matches, their crowds average 5,714.
