The scientists stated that their findings show humans can perceive a grafted tool as an integral part of their own body.
Participants were tasked to use VR to interact with either human-like hands or tweezer hands grafted onto the end of their wrists.Scientists are coming up with interesting ways to employ virtual reality , inspiring the development of new technologies even hardware.
The team conducted their work at the Sapienza University of Rome and the Santa Lucia Foundation IRCCS. The development of the tweezer hands was part of their investigation into whether humans can feel a sense of embodiment towards non-anthropomorphic“For our biology to merge seamlessly with tools, we need to feel that the tools are part of our body,” stated Ottavia Maddaluno, first author and cognitive neuroscientist.
After this, researchers compared the performance and embodiment levels between different prosthetic tools and hand configurations. “This is an index of how much of a mismatch there is in your brain between what you feel and what you see,” explained Maddaluno.
