A Mexico-based television reporter and her cameraman were struck by an out-of-control SUV while filming a live segment on the side of a busy road in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, on Friday.

Reporter and Cameraman Hurt by SUV

Journalist Alma de la Rosa and cameraman Cristo Martinez, of Gamavision Noticias, were reporting from Morones Prieto Avenue when the vehicle slammed into them. Both were rushed to an area hospital and were listed in stable condition as of Saturday, the television station said. The crew had been covering the scene of a motorcycle accident caused by a landslide that spilled debris onto the roadway following heavy rain.

Video shows De la Rosa standing off to the side of the right lane where the downpour had toppled a tree. The veteran reporter was just 33 seconds into her segment when the driver of the dark-colored SUV appeared to lose control and slid sideways in the middle lane.

Horrifying footage showed the vehicle plow into the reporter, who screamed upon impact before her cameraman was knocked to the pavement as De la Rosa went flying out of the camera shot. As the SUV barreled toward her, she attempted to push the car away to stop it from crushing her completely. Miraculously, both she and her camera operator survived the collision. Martinez bore the brunt of the impact, suffering injuries to his ankle and arm.

Survivors Describe the Collision

De la Rosa, meanwhile, managed to climb into the ambulance under her own power despite being battered in the collision. The veteran reporter, who has spent 35 years working in journalism, said she had suffered multiple blows. She remained conscious and later thanked fellow journalists and former colleagues who flooded her with messages of support. I hadn't seen the footage, but I could picture it, she said.

I am grateful to God, to life, and to everyone who was concerned about us. I want to thank you all. We're doing better now. The disastrous segment had included the journalist's plans to connect with the audience and advise motorists to be cautious.

I was actually warning them to slow down a bit, we were in a spot where we had already identified that speed needed to be reduced, she said. The driver of the Jeep remained at the scene as police attempted to understand how the crash happened. Morones Prieto Avenue is one of Monterrey's busiest thoroughfares and has been the scene of numerous serious traffic accidents.

Investigation and Viral Reaction

The condition of the driver has not been released, and it is unclear whether any charges will be filed. Local authorities are investigating the cause of the crash. Footage of the jaw-dropping incident quickly went viral on social media, where viewers reacted with disbelief. One viewer wrote that they were surprised the pair survived and hoped for their recovery.

Another questioned why the reporter was sent to the middle of a busy road, stating they could not understand it. A third joked that the good thing was that the reporter avoided a disaster by stopping the car with her hands. The incident highlights the risks journalists face while reporting from dangerous locations, especially during severe weather conditions. It also underscores the importance of road safety on busy avenues like Morones Prieto.

Flores reacted in horror as the SUV struck the news crew, bringing her live broadcast to a chaotic and abrupt halt. Seconds before impact, the dark-colored Jeep could be seen veering toward the roadside where she and her cameraman were positioned. Flores and Martinez are expected to recover from their injuries. Their employer, Gamavision Noticias, has not issued an official statement regarding the incident.

The live broadcast footage continues to be shared widely, drawing attention to the perils of live reporting and the unpredictable nature of traffic accidents.
