Discover how local hero Michael Bond turned life's trials into powerlifting triumphs
A Lincolnshire man showed great strength to recover from dark places to become a powerlifting champion with three gold medals.
“I had some periods of time when I was under a mental health team with suicidal depression and had no idea of what I was going to do with my life.”In 2010, Michael started to feel at the point where he was getting his life back together. The RAF Benevolent Fund was “brilliant” and paid for him to have rehab outside of the military after his service, with a personal trainer to help him get his fitness back.
After starting his physical rehab through the RAF in 2009, Michael started using powerlifting as a big part of keeping his mental health stable. He trained at New Image Gym in Sleaford for over 10 years and is now based at Mayhem Gym in Boston. He qualified for the British Championships with a bench press of 160kg, and at the same time set a Federation record.
“I still don’t think I quite believe it yet, it’s surreal. That record has stood for eight years and now I want to make that number higher and more difficult to beat. This led to an invitation for Michael to compete at Mr Olympia in Flordia in November 2023. “I need to keep focus with my training and push myself harder and harder. My honest goal is to set the world record in the future.”
