Former Mayor Sylvester Turner sat down with the Chronicle’s Editorial Board and explained why he should be next in line to take Sheila Jackson Lee's seat.

Former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said Thursday he would aim to hold office for no more than two terms if he secures the Democratic nomination to succeed the late U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee . Turner sat down with the Chronicle ’s Editorial Board and explained why he thinks he should be next in line to take the helm of the 18th Congressional District . Turner said, if elected, he hopes to serve as 'a bridge from where we are right now' and pass the reins to a new generation of leaders.

” Jackson Lee died in office from complications related to pancreatic cancer in mid July. Turner said he isn’t fully out of the woods yet, but there haven’t been any signs of a resurgence of his cancer since the operation. Jackson Lee’s death from the disease and Turner’s struggle with it have left some to question whether the 69-year-old former mayor will be able to keep pace with the demands of the federal government.
