Turkmenistan, a country in Central Asia, asserts that it has not recorded any COVID-19 cases in the four years since the pandemic began. However, this claim is highly unlikely, as the World Health Organization reports over 775 million infections worldwide. Turkmenistan's authoritarian government has faced criticism for banning WHO officials and dismissing reports of citizens with COVID-19 symptoms.

One country maintains that it has not recorded a single COVID-19 case four years into the pandemic. There have been at least 775 million infections worldwide, according to the World Health Organization . But none, apparently, in Turkmenistan — a landlocked nation in Central Asia that borders, among other countries, Afghanistan and Iran. That, however, is almost certainly not the reality in the former Soviet state, which is home to about 6 million people.

A World Health Organization spokesperson told SBS News in a statement that the global health body was yet to receive any COVID-19 case reports from Turkmenistan. "We rely on health authorities to inform us of confirmed cases, as per their obligations under the International Health Regulations," the statement read. "To date, Turkmenistan has not reported any cases of COVID-19.
